FDA Limits Use of Regeneron, Lilly COVID-19 Antibody Treatments

The U.S. health regulator on Monday revised the emergency use authorizations for COVID-19 antibody treatments from Regeneron and Eli Lilly to limit their use, as the drugs are unlikely to work against the omicron variant.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the treatments are currently not cleared for use in any U.S. states or territories but may be authorized in certain regions if they work against potential new variants.

The agency highlighted other therapies that are expected to be effective against omicron, including a rival antibody drug from GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology as well as recently authorized antiviral pills from Pfizer and Merck & Co.

The U.S. government in December had paused distribution of Regeneron and Lilly’s treatments and said the halt would continue until new data emerges on their efficacy against omicron.

The highly contagious new variant was estimated to account for more than 99% of cases in the United States as of Jan. 15.

GSK and Vir Biotech are boosting production of their drug sotrovimab to help meet soaring demand in the United States. The FDA has also expanded its approval for the use of Gilead Sciences’ antiviral COVID-19 drug remdesivir to treat non-hospitalized patients aged 12 years and above.

The Washington Post earlier in the day reported that the FDA was expected to revise authorizations for Regeneron and Lilly’s treatments.

A Regeneron spokesperson had said the regulator would provide any potential communication on the topic.

Lilly had no immediate comment but pointed to its statement from December saying its antibody candidate, bebtelovimab, maintains neutralization activity against all known variants of concern, including omicron.

WHO chief poised for second term after rough ride

GENEVA, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been nominated for a second term by its executive board.

Dr Tedros will be the only candidate for the election in May.

No WHO director general has had a rougher ride than him – the Covid-19 pandemic, the challenges of persuading China to share information, the harsh criticism from former US President Donald Trump, who cut funding and took the US out of the WHO claiming it was too close to Beijing.

US President Joe Biden has reversed those decisions, but huge challenges remain – the pandemic still rages, millions remain unvaccinated, there is an ongoing investigation into alleged sexual abuse by WHO staff tackling Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Dr Tedros has been criticised by his native Ethiopia for demanding humanitarian access to Tigray, which has been affected by conflict.

Murray, Poeltl power Spurs to easy 134-104 win over Rockets

Houston Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl combined for 37 points in three quarters to help the San Antonio Spurs coast to a 134-104 victory over the Houston Rockets Tuesday night.

Murray had 19 points and 10 assists and Poeltl had 18 points with nine rebounds by the end of the third quarter, and neither played after that with the Spurs up by 31, AP reports.

Houston led early in the first quarter, but the Spurs soon took over and were up by 15 at halftime. A 39-point third quarter put the game out of reach on a night San Antonio scored a season-high 82 points in the paint and shot a season-best 57.4 percent.

Kevin Porter Jr. had 16 points and nine assists for the Rockets, who lost their second game overall and ninth in a row at home. Christian Wood scored 15 points with seven rebounds for Houston.

Keldon Johnson added 16 points for San Antonio and Doug McDermott had 15.

San Antonio was up by 15 with about 8 ½ minutes left in the third quarter before using an 8-0 run with all the points in the lane, to extend it to 83-60 two minutes later. Houston had two turnovers in that stretch to help the Spurs pad the lead.

Jae’Sean Tate made Houston’s first points in almost 2 ½ minutes on a layup after that, but the Spurs used a 10-3 spurt to make it 93-65 with four minutes left in the third. Murray and Drew Eubanks had four points each to power that run.

The Spurs led 105-74 entering the fourth quarter.
