Parliament Speaker Meets with UN Officials to Discuss Elections and Governance

The Speaker of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Sheikh Aadan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe) on Thursday received a delegation led by the Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) Electoral and Peacebuilding Office, Mr. Serge G. Kubwimana, Ms. Mikyong Kim, who heads the Political Affairs Section of the Office, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Elections and Democratic Governance and UNDP Country Director for Somalia, Mr. Luis Martinez Betanzos and Mr. Walter Lotze, respectively.

Speaker Sheikh Aadan Madoobe and the UNDP and UNSOM officials discussed the importance of upcoming elections in the country and the various types of elections that could be held, as well as how to ensure that the country holds a better election than previous ones.

The UNDP and UNSOM officials also noted that the Speaker of Parliament will play an important role in the development of the parliament, training of parliamentary staff and members, and emphasized their support for the completion of the review of the Provisional Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia and important legal frameworks for the country.
