Economic Woes, War, Climate Change on Tap for Davos Meeting

The World Economic Forum is back with its first winter meetup since 2020 in the Swiss Alpine town of Davos, where leaders are seeking to bridge political divisions in a polarized world, buttress a hobbling economy and address concerns about a climate change — among many other things.

Sessions will take up issues as diverse as the future of fertilizers, the role of sports in society, the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and much more. Nearly 600 CEOs and more than 50 heads of state or government are expected, but it’s never clear how much concrete action emerges from the elite event.

Here’s what to watch as the four-day talkfest and related deal-making get underway in earnest Tuesday:

Who’s Coming?

Back in the snows for the first time since the pandemic and just eight months after a springtime 2022 session, the event will host notables like European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry, and the new presidents of South Korea, Colombia and the Philippines.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He addresses the gathering Tuesday, a day before his first meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, in Zurich. Yellen will skip Davos.

Who else is missing? U.S. President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, of course: Envoys from his country has been shunned because of his war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska was on her way to Davos and will speak Tuesday, while her husband, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will give a remote address Wednesday and other officials from Ukraine are appearing on panels.

Outside the main convention center, a themed venue known as Ukraine House is hosting a concert, photo exhibits, seminars, cocktail events and other meetings this week to drum up support for Ukraine’s efforts to drive out Russian forces.

Economic Focus

The slowdown in the global economy will be a major theme at Davos, with officials ranging from International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde speaking in sessions.

Inflation soared as the world reopened from the pandemic and Russia invaded Ukraine, driving up food and energy prices, and though it has started to slow in major economies like the U.S. and those in Europe, inflation is still painfully high.

Georgieva said in an IMF blog post Monday that divides between nations — the theme at Davos this year is “Cooperation in a Fragmented World” — are putting the global economy at risk by leaving “everyone poorer and less secure.”

Georgieva urged strengthening trade, helping vulnerable countries deal with debt and ramping up climate action.

Prioritizing Climate

A major climate theme emerging from the forum’s panel sessions is the energy transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore will be talking about decarbonization, efforts to build clean energy infrastructure and ensure an equitable transition.

It follows a strong year for the energy transition: Many countries passed incentives for renewable energy in 2022.

One hot topic on the agenda — harnessing nuclear fusion — focuses on science that offers immense potential but is many decades away from a commercial rollout that could feed the world’s skyrocketing thirst for energy.

Sessions on issues like adaptation to climate change and panels on deforestation, biodiversity and the future of environmental protection will give a greener hue to the gathering.

Critical Voices

The elite gathering is regularly skewered by critics who argue that attendees are too out-of-touch or profit- or power-minded to address the needs of common people and the planet.

Throughout the week, critics and activists will be waiting outside the Davos conference center to try to hold decision-makers and business leaders to account.

It started Sunday, when dozens of climate activists — some with clown makeup — braved snowfall to wave banners and chant slogans at the end of the Davos Promenade, a thoroughfare now lined with storefront logos of corporate titans like Accenture, Microsoft, Salesforce, Meta, as well as country “houses” that promote national interests.

Greenpeace International also blasted use of corporate jets that ferry in bigwigs, saying such carbon-spewing transportation smacks of hypocrisy for an event touting its push for a greener world. It said over 1,000 private-jet flights arrived and departed airports serving Davos in May.

Forum President Borge Brende acknowledged Sunday that some government leaders and CEOs fly in that way.

“I think what is more important than that is to make sure we have agreements on how we, overall, move and push the envelope when it comes to the green agenda,” he said.

Grizzlies beat Suns 136-106, extend winning streak to 10

Memphis, The Memphis Grizzlies are making lengthy winning streaks an annual occurrence.

Ja Morant scored 29 points, Desmond Bane added 28 and the Grizzlies extended their season-high winning streak to 10 games with a 136-106 win over the injury-depleted Phoenix Suns on Monday night.

Memphis set a franchise record last season by winning 11 in a row, AP reports.

Despite another double-digit win streak, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins sees room for improvement.

“There’s no finished product whatsoever, we’re just trying to find different ways to win ball games, especially at this juncture of the season,” Jenkins said.

The Suns played without starters Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Paul missed his fifth straight game with a right hip injury. Booker has not played since Christmas Day because of a groin injury.

Mikal Bridges scored 21 points and Deandre Ayton added 18 for the Suns. Phoenix (21-24) lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

Jaren Jackson Jr. contributed 18 points and six blocks for the Grizzlies (30-13), who did not play starters Morant or Dillon Brooks in the fourth quarter when Memphis stretched its lead to as many as 36 points.

Memphis also scored 130 or more points for the third straight game, matching the franchise-record run of last February.

Bane said the win streak has been aided, in large part, by the team’s defense. The Grizzlies had eight steals and six blocks against the Suns.

The win streak followed a stretch in which the Grizzles lost four of five. The last loss was to Phoenix on Dec. 27 in Memphis.

“Every team is going to have ups and downs,” Bane said. “They either make you stronger or you give in to them.”

The Grizzlies started slow, trailing by as many as 11 in the opening quarter before using a dominating third quarter to pull away. Memphis outscored the Suns 39-23 in the third quarter and built a 22-point advantage (103-81) following a three-point play by Morant.

The Suns started strong, hitting 11 of their first 15 shots, including their first six, to lead by as many as 11 in the opening quarter.

The Grizzlies regained the lead late in the second quarter after Morant drained three consecutive 3-pointers for a 60-58 Memphis lead and never trailed again.

Memphis outscored the Suns 68-41 in the second half.

“We’ve just got to regroup and go back home,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “This has been a tough, tough stretch for us on a number of fronts. The wins and losses. The injuries. And we lose (Josh Okogie) tonight and he was playing his tail off. So you just pack it up, go home and get ready for the next one.”

TIP-INS

Suns: Landry Shamet returned and scored nine points after missing the last three games with a hip injury. … Josh Okogie left the game with 4:03 to go in the second quarter after being fouled by Steven Adams and suffering a nose injury. Okogie walked to the locker room under his own power, but did not return.

Grizzlies: The Grizzlies honored NBA greats Gary Payton and Luol Deng, women’s basketball pioneer Nancy Lieberman and former NFL running back Eddie George before the game with the 18th Annual National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy Award. … Memphis improved its home record to 19-3 at FedExForum, an .863 home winning percentage that leads the NBA. … Morant is averaging 29 points during the team’s 10-game win streak.

A SPECIAL OCCASION

Phoenix coach Monty Williams said it was an honor to be selected to play on Martin Luther King Day. And although he wasn’t able to make it to the National Civil Rights Museum in downtown Memphis on this trip, he said visiting the museum is educational and emotional.

“I think it’s really cool for us and I hope it’s cool for the younger plays who may have only heard about Dr. King or read something about him in school,” Williams said.

Somali Forces Capture Two Towns from Militants

The Somali government reported on Monday that government forces have captured two towns previously controlled by militant group al-Shabab in the central Galmudug State.

Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur told VOA Somali that government forces and local fighters seized Harardhere and Galcad after the militants fled without a fight.

Harardhere is a key coastal town and a former pirate hub. It was the biggest and most strategic town in Galmudug that was still in the hands of al-Shabab until Monday.

“Today, it’s a big day for the Somali people, it’s a victory for the Somalis,” Nur said. “We have succeeded in taking control of Galcad and Harardhere districts.”

He said Somali government forces were leading the operation to seize both towns with support from regional and local fighters.

Nur said Harardhere is largely empty and accused al-Shabab of “displacing” the civilians from the town before government troops arrived. Business places are closed down, he said.

He said the government will work on returning the residents to the town.

The capture of Galcad, about 375 kilometers north of Mogadishu, and Harardhere indicates the government-led offensive against al-Shabab in central Somalia is progressing.

The government has reported killing hundreds of militants and seizing dozens of localities in neighboring Hirshabelle state since the military operations were launched in August.

The government has also reported shutting down hundreds of bank and mobile money accounts allegedly linked with al-Shabab in an effort to curtail the group’s revenue generation activities.

Al-Shabab – known for imposing a harsh, punitive brand of Islam in the areas it controls — has fought back with suicide bombings and retaliatory attacks. An explosion from a suicide car bomb hit a building housing a security officer in Halgan village, Hiran region on Monday. a police official told VOA Somali.

Colonel Hassan Kaafi Mohamed Ibrahim, a deputy police commander in Hiran region confirmed that the explosion killed Jamal Ahmed Jama, a captain with the local security forces.

Jama was a government officer who was also involved in the local force mobilization against al-Shabab, reports say.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the suicide car bombing in Halgan, 260 kilometers north of Mogadishu.

The group also said it has inflicted “heavy losses” through other recent suicide bombings.

Al-Shabab was behind three explosions in Hiran region’s Bulobarde and Jalalaqsi towns on Saturday, killing 13 people and wounding over 50 other people, according to local officials.

On January 4, more than 20 people, a majority of them civilians, were killed in two explosions from vehicle-borne explosive devices in Mahaas town, in the eastern part of the Hiran region.

Battling Al-Shabaab: The Financial Front in the War on Terror

The Federal Republic of Somalia led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has launched a concerted efforts to eradicate the pernicious influence of extremist group Al-Shabaab. Central to this strategy has been the targeting of the financial resources of the organization, which has been predicated upon the illicit acquisition of funds through nefarious means. To this end, the government has implemented measures to close a significant number of bank accounts and mobile numbers that were utilized by the group for the transfer of funds.

President Mohamud has been forthright in his condemnation of the group’s use of these funds to perpetuate harm upon the Somali population, and has articulated a clear determination to completely sever their access to financial resources. The Dan-Qaran Government has also issued warnings to the Somali people and merchants to refrain from engaging in any form of economic transaction with the terrorist organization. Additionally, the government has provided a mechanism for members of the public to report any information that may be pertinent to the ongoing efforts to disrupt the group’s financial networks.

These efforts have yielded substantial successes, with the group’s military capabilities being significantly degraded as a result of the disruption of their financial resources. This has enabled the government and local forces to reclaim territory that had been under the control of the extremists, thereby alleviating the suffering of the local population. Furthermore, the government has taken steps to arrest traditional leaders who were in league with the group and has targeted and dismantled the illegal courts that were used by the organization to exert control over the population.

Prime Minister Hamse has emphasized that providing financial support to the group constitutes a criminal act, warning that any individuals found to be involved in such activities will be held accountable. In light of these efforts, it is clear that the group has been severely weakened and that their eventual elimination from areas where they continue to operate within the country is a realistic prospect. This is a significant victory in the ongoing struggle against extremism in Somalia.
