HPR Deputy Speaker Calls on National Dialogue Commission to Commence Dialogue Quickly

House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Deputy Speaker Lomi Bedo urged the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission to attain its goals by commencing the national dialogue quickly.

Presenting the National Dialogue Commission annual performance report to the House of People’s Representatives today, Chief Commissioner Professor Mesfin Araya said the commission has been carrying out various activities to identify priority areas and effectively execute its responsibilities.

In the first round of its activities, the commission has so far identified national agendas and participants to the consultative forums in 5 regions.

As it has continued the work in other regions, it has been carrying out a number of preparatory activities to conduct the national dialogue across the country, he added.

The identification of partners and venues of the dialogue as well as provision of training materials and creating awareness among the public about the work procedures of the commission are some of the activities so far carried out, he said.

However, Professor Mesfin stressed that media communication support are crucial as the issue should be the main agenda of the public and the government.

Extensive efforts are underway to enhance partnership with humanitarian organizations, Council of Ethiopian Political Parties, Teachers Association, Inter Religious Council of Ethiopia, among others, with a view to effectively conduct inclusive dialogue by engaging all stakeholders.

The people have confidence in the commission in areas where the commission has so far conducted public gatherings, the chief commissioner stated.

House of People’s Representatives Deputy Speaker, Lomi Bedo urged the commission to attain its goals by commencing the national dialogue quickly.

The House will provide all the necessary support to the commission, she said, calling on the commission to make the dialogue inclusive with adequate access to the media.

Government Chief Whip Tesfaye Beljige said the performance of the commission is very encouraging, stressing the need to conduct the dialogue by adhering to the time table and focusing on major national agendas.
