General situation in july 2019 Forecast until mid-september 2019

WESTERN REGION: QUIET

SITUATION. Small-scale breeding continued in Algeria (115 ha treated) and started in northern Niger. Groups of hoppers and adults have formed in southwestern Libya. Scattered adults have appeared in southeastern Mauritania. FORECASTS. Small-scale breeding will occur in Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Chad, resulting in a small increase in locust numbers.

CENTRAL REGION: THREAT

SITUATION. Control operations (1,300 ha) decreased in Saudi Arabia. Bands and swarms formed in Yemen and 4,600 ha were treated. A few swarms moved to northeastern Somalia and Oman. Breeding took place in Ethiopia and bands were formed in northwestern Somalia. Groups of adults were treated (1,180 ha) in Sudan.

FORECASTS. More swarms will form in Yemen, and breeding of a new generation will cause locust numbers to increase, as populations may reach southwestern Saudi Arabia. Hopper bands may form in Ethiopia, while smaller scale breeding will occur in Sudan and western Eritrea.

EASTERN REGION: THREAT

SITUATION. Control operations increased in India (26,764 ha) and continued in Pakistan (7,666 ha) against swarms and hopper bands, but decreased in Iran (31,307 ha) against spring breeding populations. . There have been reports of breeding in southern Afghanistan.

FORECASTS. Locust infestations will increase as a result of widespread outbreaks and band formation in Rajasthan, India, as well as second generation breeding in Pakistan.
