2024 Pho3nix Kids Fun Run ends successful


The first edition of Pho3nix Kids Fun Run Competition has ended successfully at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park on Saturday in Accra.

The competition was exciting as future distance runners aged from five years to sixteen years exhibited their skills and talent.

The event was in partnership with Ono Sports Foundation and Pho3nix Kids with participants racing between 0n to seven kilometers.

Joseph Bankam from Sekondi in the Western Region won the seven kilometers race.

The other events were dominated by kids from the Ashanti Region who performed remarkably to win medals and cash prizes at stake ranging from GHC 500 to GHC 1000.

Ms. Mercy Jane Adorkor Pappoe, a Triathlon athlete and manager at Ono Sports said she was overwhelmed with the massive participation as this was the first event in Africa and Ghana as a whole.

She was elated that the concept and message of sports, education and healthy living have caught up with many people from all over the country.

Mr. Fiifi Appiah, CEO of Ono Sports Foundation promised that the next edition would be better as they have learnt many lessons from the event.

‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration underway


The ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration being staged by some Sports Journalists is underway in Accra.

Sports Journalist Saddick Adams, one of the lead conveners of the demonstration, told Ghana News Agency on Sunday that they had outlined some proposals that sought new structural reforms in Ghana’s football.

Vice President Bawumia is special guest of honour for J. A. Kufuor Cup


Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be the special guest of honour for the highly anticipated J. A. Kufuor Cup at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, February 18, 2024.

The fixture will be between premier league giants Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC who would both fight for the coveted trophy.

The Vice President, together with other dignitaries from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Authority, Ghana Football Association (GFA), and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), have all pledged their support to grace the occasion.

The J.A. Kufuor Cup is organised by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation to raise funds and honour the profound legacy of the former President.

Former Black Stars Captain, Stephen Appiah, and GFA President Kurt Okraku have all pledged their support for the match and have purchased over 5000 match tickets to be distributed to football fans for the match on Sunda.

This is the second edition of the JA Kufuor Cup match.

The maiden edition was between Asante
Kotoko and Ashantigold at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

GFA hails President Kufuor’s contribution in Sports development


Mr. Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has showered praises on former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his role in development of football during his tenure of office.

The former President was instrumental in Ghana’s early football success, securing a place at the World Cup for the first time, heading Asante Kotoko and many other contributions.

President Okraku speaking at the unveiling of the J.A Kufuor Cup said ‘Our President played his part and indeed continue to play his part in developing our football.

‘From the time before and the time he took leadership of Krobea Asante Kotoko to the time he took us to the mundial in 2006,’ he noted.

He said the only way to appreciate the former President for his good works was to support his aim of raising funds for his foundation and also contributing to the growth of football.

The FA President announced that he together with some selected friends would purchase 5,000 tickets to the organisers, which would be distributed to football
fans.

The J.A Kufuor Cup, scheduled to take place on Sunday February 18, 2024, between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC is part of the arrangements by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation to raise funds and honour the profound legacy of the former President.

‘The GFA is very supportive of this course, we have given our blessing and indeed we will be at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday to fully support this special game,’ he said.

Mr. Kurt Okraku called on Ghanaians to come out in their numbers and rally behind the two teams who would battle each other at the football capital.

Hundreds of soccer enthusiasts demonstrate to demand reforms in Ghana’s football


For the first time in the history of Ghanaian football, some concerned fans and sports journalists on Wednesday staged a demonstration to vent their frustrations over the decline of football in the country.

The fans started their walk at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle as they marched through the principal streets of Accra in black branded t-shirts, singing and chanting to demand football reforms.

Dubbed the ‘Save Ghana Football Demonstration,’ protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘Sika Di Basabasa Montwa So,’: Decline in Our Football,’ ‘Minister, Be Firm or be Fired,’ ‘Grow Our Sports, Not Your Football Clubs.’

Others read, ‘Football is for All of Us,’ ‘Football is Our Passion, Don’t Kill It, Kurt,’ and ‘Fix the Fundamentals of Ghana Football Now,’ among others.

Despite agitations over the route to be used, football fans finally ended up at the Black Star Square, where they were addressed by Conveners over the proposal submitted to appropriate authorities.

Addressing the hundr
eds gathered at the Black Star Square, Sports Journalist, Saddick Adams(Sports Obama), a Lead Convenor of the demonstration, was grateful to fans for showing up in their numbers to support the course of revamping Ghanaian football.

‘We want the President of Ghana and Parliament to institute a committee to investigate our participation at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as well as AFCON 2023 regarding the budget.

‘Those who took $100,000 at the World Cup should return it to the state budget, and we demand accountability, especially with the sponsorships we got for our national team.

‘We want the government to dissolve all management committees, and we have proposed how our teams should be run in the petition presented to all stakeholders,’ he said.

Saddick Adams also demanded the immediate dissolution of the committee put together to search for a new coach for the Black Stars and called for an interim technical team to be put in place by the close of the week to investigate what happened at the 2023 AFCON.

‘N
o taxpayer’s money should be used to pay GFA officials, as those monies could be used to develop our Colts football, women’s league, and our league,’ he said.

The Convenors presented their petition to the Parliament, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as other stakeholders.

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah backs J. A Kufuor Cup


Stephen Appiah, former Black Stars Captain has purchased a total of 1000 tickets to support the J.A Kufuor Cup which will be played between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC on Sunday February 18,2024.

The competition is part of arrangements by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation to support the noble works of the foundation by raising funds and honour the profound legacy of the former President.

Speaking at the unveiling of the J.A Kufuor Cup, Appiah said ‘With the support you showed us during my time as a captain, on Sunday I want to purchase 1000 tickets to also support the game’.

He expressed appreciation to the former President following the role he played in developing sports during his tenure as President of Ghana.

He recalled years back when the Black Stars qualified for their first World Cup tournament after much effort by President Kufuor who was always at their aid in times of need.

Stephen Appiah, who was a key member of the 2006 squad said the former President built a friendly relationship with
the Black Stars which motivated the boys put up an exceptional performance both on the continent and at the world stage.

The former Juventus man wished the two teams, Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC goodluck ahead of the high-anticipated clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium this weekend.

Melcom Care Foundation supports J.A Kufuor Cup


Melcom Care Foundation, a subsidiary of the Melcom Group of Companies has supported the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation ahead of its highly-anticipated football event scheduled for February 18,2024.

The donation was an undisclosed free shopping vouchers for players who would be competing in the event.

Mr. Godwin Avenorgbo, Group Director of Communications at Melcom speaking during short ceremony said sport played an important role in bringing together people from all walks of life.

He expressed excitement having seen the John Agyekum Kufuor foundation contribute to the development of sports, hence the need to also come onboard and support the mission.

‘Ghana Sports was the envy of Africa decades ago and we were leaders and reigning champions in the game of football in Africa but unfortunately our standards in football have sunk so low that we have now become a laughing stock in any arena where football is discussed,’ he said.

He stated that the performance of the Black Stars at the just ended Africa Cup o
f Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast was an indication of how football was declining in Ghana.

Mr.Avenorgbo called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Football Association and other bodies to put in efforts in making Ghana a football powerhouse again.

‘I have observed also that an over concentration on football to the neglect of other previously useful sports disciplines like athletics, volleyball, boxing, hockey, basketball, table tennis, and others would make a tremendous impact on the nation’s psyche and influence high productivity at the work place,’ the Group Director added.

He congratulated the JAK Foundation for the novel football celebration in a competitive spirit for national cohesion.

Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah, Chief Executive Officer of John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation thanked Melcom Group of Companies for the kind gesture.

‘Melcom has always been there when it’s needed. This is not the first time we have met and the former President told me sometime ago that years back
he was friends with the founder of Melcom so I am not surprised that you have come to our aid’, he added.

He said the main purpose of the games is to raise funds to aid the noble work the foundation was doing to support youth mentoring and education.

The J.A Kufuor Cup would be between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday February 18,2024.

The match is to honour the profound legacy of the former President and also climax his 85th birthday celebration.
