US offers reward up to $10 million for information on Abu Ubaidah (Diriye)

The United States is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information on Ahmed Diriye, also known as Ahmed Umar and Abu Ubaidah. Abu Ubaidah serves as the leader of al-Shabaab—a position he has occupied since the death of former al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane. Abu Ubaidah was part of Godane’s inner circle at the time of Godane’s death.

Prior to replacing Godane, Abu Ubaidah served in several positions within al-Shabaab, including as Godane’s assistant, the deputy governor of the Lower Juba region of Somalia in 2008, and al-Shabaab’s governor of the Bay and Bakool regions of Somalia in 2009. By 2013, he was a senior adviser to Godane, and served in al-Shabaab’s “Interior Department,” where he oversaw the group’s domestic activity. He shares Godane’s vision for Al-Shabaab’s terrorist attacks in Somalia as an element of al-Qa’ida’s greater global aspirations.

On April 21, 2015, the U.S. Department of State designated Abu Ubaidah as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. As a result of this designation, among other consequences, all property and interests in property of Abu Ubaidah that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with Abu Ubaidah. In addition, it is a crime to knowingly provide, or attempt or conspire to provide, material support or resources to al-Shabaab, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization

Farmers rejoice as President Akufo-Addo announces historic increase in cocoa producer price

A spontaneous jubilation greeted the announcement of a new producer price for the 2023/2024 cocoa season by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Tepa in the Ahafo-Ano Municipality on Saturday.
The President had to take a break in his speech for about five minutes as the elated farmers rushed in front of the podium to express their excitement about the quantum increase of the producer price.
It took security details present to restrict some of them from climbing the podium in their joyous mood.
‘Today, cocoa prices have increased from GHC 12,800.00 to GHC 20,943.00 per tonne and GHC 1,308.00 per bag, the President announced.
This translates into 63.5 per cent increase from the current price of GHC 800.00, making it the highest to be paid to cocoa farmers across West Africa in some 15 years, according to the President.
To address the current challenges of the cocoa sector, government has introduced a number of innovative policies hinged on three pillars – resilience, competitiveness, and robustness.
President Akufo-Addo said COCOBOD had rolled out a contributory scheme under the new three-tier pension scheme for cocoa farmers, adding that enrolment had started and would continue to capture more farmers in the coming seasons.
He disclosed that COCOBOD would contribute GHC 74.5 million to the fund this year and the expectation was that the scheme would enable cocoa farmers to contribute towards their retirement.
‘The government will continue to honour our farmers with good prices in the years ahead. Indeed, better days are ahead,’ he assured cocoa farmers.
He said the cocoa landscape was witnessing unprecedented transformation under his leadership, saying that COCOBOD was implementing series of transformational projects which were having positive impacts of productivity, incomes, and climate resilience.
These, he said, would not have been possible without the hard work and determination of cocoa farmers who remained the most reliable stakeholders in the entire cocoa value chain.
Mr Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture, said cocoa was an extremely important commodity driving the development of the country.
He said the Ministry was mindful of the roles of farmers whose toils and sweats were sustaining the cocoa sector for the benefit of the nation.
‘Ghana continues to pride herself as a global leader of cocoa production and the world’s best producer of quality cocoa beans because of the resolve and determination of our farmers,’ the Minister acknowledged.
He also spoke about the challenges confronting the cocoa sector including smuggling and illegal mining and expressed his determination to tackle them head-on.

MTN Foundation touches more lives as it presents scholarship to 60 students in northern sector

Sixty (60) brilliant but needy students in the Northern sector of the country pursuing various courses have received scholarship from the MTN Foundation at a brief ceremony in Kumasi.
The beneficiaries drawn from 17 public universities across the country were the second batch to be awarded by the telecommunication giants under its Bright Scholarship programme launched in 2018.
Dubbed: ‘Bright Scholarship Reloaded,’ the initiative seeks to ease the financial burden on students who are excelling academically but struggling to cater for their tuition and hostel fees.
Each of the public universities in the 16 regions were represented as part of the selection criteria, which ensured 200 applicants were shortlisted among 1,900 applications received across the country.
The number was further reduced to 120 after a rigorous selection process with emphasis on engineering, information communication technology (ICT), computer science and the sciences.
Persons with disabilities were also not left of the life-changing opportunity in line with the company’s values which include inclusivity and fairness.
Apart from covering tuition and hostel fees, the beneficiaries would also receive a stipend every semester in addition to a laptop each from MTN as part of the scholarship.
Dr Gordon Sabutey, a member of the interview panel who outlined the processes for the selection of the awardees congratulated them for making the final list.
He encouraged them to justify their selection by maintaining or improving their academic records to make the investment being made in their education by MTN Foundation worthwhile.
Mr. Samuel Koranteng, a Board Member of MTN Foundation, said the company found the intervention fulfilling considering the impact it was making on the lives of beneficiaries.
‘We are always happy to see that our investments are indeed making a difference in the lives of beneficiaries. We continue to review the scholarship programme to reflect the Foundation’s strategic direction, and industry trends to make it more relevant,’ he added.
He said MTN firmly believed that it was in the company’s interest as a telecommunication industry player to invest for the future and the future was digital skills.
‘We will continue to commit funds to implement projects that will continuously brighten the lives of the beneficiaries,’ Mr Koranteng assured.
He reminded the awardees that the journey of learning was life-long and charged them to continue to pursue excellence not just for themselves but for the betterment of the world.
The Foundation, he reiterated, was committed to providing unwavering support throughout their educational journey and their chosen academic fields.

School for Life marks International Literacy Day

School for Life, a non-government organisation (NGO) has commemorated this year’s International Literacy Day with a reading competition for Complementary Basic Education (CBE) learners at Kpunduli in the Nanton District of the Northern Region.
The CBE learners at Kpunduli, Afayili, Nanton, Limanfon, Zieng, Digu and Gunu participated in the competition, which was to examine their ability to identify vowels, consonants and other basic reading skills in their mother-tongue.
Each community presented two contestants for the competition, and they all received school bags and other learning materials as their prizes for participating in the competition.
This year’s International Literacy Day celebration was on the theme: ‘Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies.’
Madam Wedad Sayibu, Director of School for Life, whose speech was read on her behalf at the event, said the theme for the occasion underscored the significance of literacy to empower individuals and promote socio-economic development across the world.
School for Life, this year, began implementing the CBE (Alternative Learning Programme) in the district, enabling out-of-school children in the area to undergo classes to acquire basic literacy, and numeracy skills in their mother-tongues to enable them to enroll in the formal school system.
Madam Sayibu emphasised that ‘Literacy affords us the requisite skills to fully participate in our increasingly complex and interconnected world. It is the foundation upon which knowledge is built, ideas are shared, and opportunities are seized.’
She said literacy was not just a skill, but a right and pathway to a brighter future, adding that each one had a role to play in fostering a world where everyone could read, write and access the knowledge they needed to thrive.
She said despite the various interventions in promoting literacy, there were still millions of Ghanaians, especially in marginalised communities, who still did not have access to quality education and basic literacy skills.
She said the periodic National Early Grade Reading Assessment conducted by the National Education Assessment Unit increasingly showed that a good number of children in basic schools could not read and write.
Madam Sayibu attributed the situation to conflicts, poverty and gender inequality among others and called for more pragmatic measures to improve the literacy rate in the country.
Mr Mohammed Mumuni Adams, Nanton District Director of Education, expressed need for parents and guardians in the area to take advantage of the various interventions instituted by the government to enroll their children in school.
He said education was the weapon to addressing inequality, poverty, deprivation and hunger and expressed the need for parents to invest in the education of their children.
He advised children to eschew laziness and endeavour to work hard to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Mr Mahamadu Sayibu, Chief of Kpunduli community, who was represented at the event, commended School for Life for its interventions towards promoting education and literacy in the Nanton District, saying they had contributed significantly to reducing illiteracy, child marriage and teenage pregnancy in the area.

New cocoa season opens on Saturday September 09, 2023

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to open the 2023/24 cocoa season and announce a new producer price for the commodity today, Saturday September 09, 2023.
This year’s opening of the cocoa season is earlier than expected since October every year has been the date for the announcement of the opening of the season for the country’s main cash crop.
Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Chief Executive of COCOBOD, who made this known, said the decision to open the season earlier was to encourage farmers who have been hoarding their produce in anticipation of a new price, to release them to help prevent the beans from going waste.
He said with the low beans received during the light crop season, management believed that some farmers were hoarding the beans in anticipation of a new producer price for this year.
Mr Aidoo said changing the regime from October to September would also help farmers get money to pay their wards school fees and other expenses.
He said the producer price is determined by a review committee every year.
He noted that with the current favourable price of cocoa on the international market, which stood at $3000, per ton, the new producer price will definitely be increased.
Mr Aidoo said the new price, which would be announced by the President at a ceremony at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North District, would be historic.
The Chief Executive said with the favourable weather patterns, which had resulted in adequate rainfall in the country this year and the success of the cocoa rehabilitation programme, resulting in the rejuvenation of most cocoa farms, the country was expecting high yields in cocoa production this year.
