Johannesburg, June 02, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —
  • MultiChoice Group, the largest producer of original content on the African continent, is set to debut SHAKA ILEMBE, its biggest ever primetime-drama series.
  • Created by the award-winning South African Emmy and Oscar nominated team at Bomb Productions, with global star Nomzamo Mbatha taking on double billing as lead actress and Executive Producer.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed MultiChoice Group is about to debut it’s biggest ever prime-time drama series, Shaka Ilembe, an epic 12-part tale that follows the origins story of the legendary African monarch and military strategist, King Shaka. Six years in the making, the highly anticipated series boasts the talents of some of South Africa’s biggest stars, including Coming 2 America lead actress Nomzamo Mbatha.

With the epic series launching across sub-Saharan Africa on MultiChoice’s video entertainment service DStv this June, Shaka Ilembe is already attracting significant interest outside of the continent. MultiChoice Studios, the busy sales and distribution arm of the sub-Saharan business, is hard at work introducing the title to international buyers at film markets from Cannes to Los Angeles, building on a growing MultiChoice slate of original production exports including the Emmy nominated Reyka and the Deon Meyer penned Trackers.

For Nomsa Philiso, CEO of MultiChoice General Entertainment, Shaka Ilembe offers audiences worldwide the opportunity to immerse into a rich dynastic African story, set in the 1700’s.

“We are confident that this series will travel. It speaks, not only the heritage of the Zulu Nation, but to the fascination that the world has always had with King Shaka. It speaks to Africans owning the stories that their ancestors lived. And it celebrates that, long before colonialism, beyond the pages of history, there was a majestic ancient era of African Kings and Queens, warriors, healers, and leaders who lived, loved, ruled, battled, and above all, entrenched a legacy and culture that endures even today. Further, the series was filmed in isiZulu so it carries a distinct language identity, but it will be sub-titled in multiple languages so audiences from across the globe can enjoy it.”

Central to the Shaka Ilembe story is actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who balances her Executive Producer responsibilities with fulfilling a life-long ambition to play King Shaka’s beloved mother, Queen Nandi.

Speaking to her dual roles on Shaka Ilembe, Mbatha says, “This series is rich in depth, and was shot in 4K on a tremendous scale that fuels the narrative. From the fierce battlefield choreography and the meticulous accuracy of the wardrobe to the resonance of the script, it’s remarkable. And while this is a fictional story, it’s inspired by real events, people, and places. Already, ahead of our domestic launch audiences at home are very supportive because, they know like I do, that TV series like Shaka Ilembe transcends entertainment, and delivers representation, diversity, and progress.”

Mbatha leads off a top-flight ensemble cast featuring some of the country’s most charismatic leading men – Lemogang Tsipa, Senzo Radebe, Wiseman Mncube, Thembinkosi Mthembu and Mondli Makhoba alongside powerful character actresses Khabonina Qubeka, Sthandiwe Kgoroge, Dawn Thandeka King and rising star Hope Mbhele. Meanwhile, playing the boy destined to be King, is gifted young newcomer Ntando Zondi whose prodigious talent was unearthed during the filming of the series.

Filmed in South Africa, SHAKA ILEMBE features much of the country’s magnificent wildlife and scenery, including the mountains, savanna, and coastline of the lushly beautiful province of KwaZulu Natal, home to the majority of South Africa’s Zulu people. Key filming locations here included the towns of Eshowe, Nkandla Forest, Port Edward, Drakensburg, Mooi River and Zulu Falls.

Meanwhile other parts of the series were shot on a purpose-built backlot near the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Cradle of Humankind” where Emmy and Academy nominated showrunners Bomb Productions hosted the King of the Zulu Nation, His Excellency Misuzulu kaZwelithini, during a special visit to the set for the Royal to see first-hand the level of detail and care that was employed to ensure that the authenticity of the set.

For Mauro Black, MultiChoice Studios Content, Sales, and Distributions Director, it is this credibility of intention and execution that makes SHAKA ILEMBE a powerful cultural export.

“International buyers are discerning about what they will bring their local audiences from the global TV marketplace. So, from inception, SHAKA ILEMBE was crafted to weld an immense depth of oral, written and illustrated Zulu history into the framework of a highly watchable prime-time drama. The result is a deeply meaningful but profoundly enjoyable title that should win fans in markets as diverse as Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.”

With over 8000 people contributing their skills to create Shaka Ilembe, the series has already won the support of five of South Africa’s biggest brands (Telkom, LottoStar, Grant’s Whisky, Toyota SA and Santam) who all signed on as commercial partners within days of seeing an extended preview of the series.  In addition, it’s Academy Award and BAFTA nominated Creative Director Angus Gibson and Sundance winning Executive Producer Desiree Markgraaff have drawn from the best of South Africa’s talent, including acclaimed Zulu musician Mbuso Khoza whose skill and vision drives the series soundtrack.

Licence revocation: NAMB begins recapitalisation appraisal of MFBs

The National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB) has directed all licensed Microfinance Banks (MFBs) nationwide to update it on their recapitalization status for assessment and follow-up actions with the regulatory authorities.

The Executive Secretary of the NAMB, Mr Shikir Caleb, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

The decision is coming barely a week after the revocation of 179 MFBs licences by the monetary authorities and the negative implications for its financial inclusion drive.

Caleb said that the decision was taken in Abuja at an emergency meeting of the leaders of the NAMB after vigorous deliberations on the latest licence revocation action of many MFBs by the CBN.

According to him, the meeting had in attendance the Board of Trustees, the Past Presidents and members of the National Working Committee.

He said that the meeting had its main agenda the revocation of the licences of the affected MFBs and how to proactively forestall future negative occurrence in the MFB sub-sector of the financial system.

“Following the review and deliberations on the licence revocation matter, the top leaders of the NAMB directed that the various state chapters should categorize the affected micro lenders into MFBs that have fully re-capitalised but yet to be approved by CBN.

“MFBs that have not been fully re-capitalised but had ongoing discussions for funding; MFBs that were yet to re-capitalise; and MFBs that have long closed shop”.

According to Caleb, the leaders further advised any MFB that had fully re-capitalised but yet to be approved by CBN to present its submissions to the Secretariat with a summary of its recapitalization status as at date.

He stated that thereafter, the leaders also agreed that the association would review the submissions and have a meeting with all MFBs this Thursday in Abuja “with a view to collating all submissions for engagement with the management of CBN.”

Commenting on the licence revocation the NAMB National President, Mr Joshua Ukute, rued the ugly development and promised that the “leadership of the association will continue to intensify its self-regulation activities in all MfBs nationwide to forestall this type of occurrence.

“We have also mandated the Secretariat of the NAMB to do more by enlightening the public, especially all stakeholders in the association’s financial inclusion drive value-chain with the aim of building confidence in the MfB sub-sector of the financial system.

“As you all know, the MFBs have over the years remained at the forefront of the financial inclusion strategy agenda’s implementation and they will continue to do their best to deepen financial services, especially in remote communities that the big players are not ready to go,” the banker added

“Fifty years from now, half of the Assembly members will not be around and very few people will know that we existed. So we should work the earth with humility.

“As much as possible, let us strive to be humble and as much as possible let us strive to be kind to each other.

“Power, wealth are gift from Allah to humanity. May Allah make our contributions toward the construction of this mosque a blessing.

“Even if we are gone, reward from the construction of this mosque will follow us,” he said.

He felicitated with the Muslim Ummah in the National Assembly for contributing resources in building the edifice.

The president recognised the crucial role played by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila in the construction of the mosque.

“I recognise their contributions without whose consent not a single erection plan would have been effected for the construction of the mosque.”

Similarly, the Sultan of Sokoto and President, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Sa’ad Abubakar III,

felicitated with the Muslims on the realisation of the construction of the mosque.

The Sultan who was represented by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero thanked the leaders, the senators and members of the house of representatives for the contributions made to the success of the edifice.

“Certainly it is Allah’s will that the 9th National Assembly did this great work.

“We thank Allah for giving them the opportunity to build the mosque. We pray Allah will reward them with what he has promised to whoever contributes to the building of a mosque.

“We pray Allah will continue to guide and bless the national assembly so that they will continue to work for the betterment of humanity.”

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan said that “We consider ourselves very lucky that God has chosen us for this mosque to be a reality.

“This is one investment that will continue to yield dividends even after we depart this world.

“May Allah continue to give us the opportunity to serve him and serve humanity.”

He said that the mosque provided not only environment for them to pray the Jumma’t and other prayers “it could even enhance the productivity of staff because they may not need to go far away from here for prayers.

“Maintenance should be our business; that is by those who made the contribution; 400,000 per month for a senator and 250, 000 per member of the house of representatives of the 9th assembly.

“We have our brothers and sisters in the 10th national assembly. I believe that the next assembly, that the maintenance of the mosque should be our business as well.”

Chairman, Mosque Construction Committee, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau (PDP-Kano) said that the idea for the construction of the new National Assembly Mosque began in 2021.

This, he said was when the joint leadership of the two legislative chambers set up the National Assembly Mosque Project Management Committee.

“It comprised of four senators, 10 members of the House of Representatives and three members from national assembly management.

“It was to look into the possibility of providing a permanent and more befitting mosque to replace the makeshift mosque which proved to be very inadequate.

“All 227 of us agreed to bear the brunt of the project, and within eight months of this agreement, we had contributed well over N570 million.

“Apart from earning Allah’s pleasure, these lawmakers have set the pace and made history by providing what is long overdue to the Muslim members of this huge legislative community.

“Arguably, this is the first Mosque built in the 42-year existence of the National Assembly,” Shekarau said.

Also speaking, Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal said that the desire for a Jumm’at mosque became necessary due to the demanding nature of legislative work.

“This is as it relates to parliamentarians and legislative staff which makes it tasking to attend Jumma’t mosque by worshiping outside the assembly.

“The mosque is now a great relieve,’ Tambuwal said.

Foundation supports basic schools in Ho West with sanitary pad

Girls in basic school in the Ho West and adjoining districts of the Volta Region are being supported with sanitary pads to ensure menstrual hygiene.

Schools in Dzolo Gbogame, Kpedze, Akoviefe and Aflakpe communities received free sanitary pads during a weeklong distribution and menstrual education exercise to mark the World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The Mawauadek Foundation, a non-profit organisation, formed in 2018 to support needy students, had since taken up the challenge to ensure girls in basic school are period secure.

Mawufemor Adekpuitor, Founder of Mawuadek, at a sensitisation programme for schools in the Dzolo areas, held at the St Anthony’s Basic School in Dzolo Gbogame, said it sought to end stigma and the disruptions in school activities for most girls during the monthly menstrual cycle.

He said the Foundation was sustaining the exercise as an annual event and needed support from benevolent individuals and organisations.

Madam Edna Mortey, Founder of Women in Technical Education, who represented the District Director of Education, said mensuration had become a conduit for discrimination against girls, and encouraged them not to let anything discourage them in managing the life cycle.

‘You should not run away from your own shadow,’ she said, and commended the Foundation for its support to ensure total acceptance of the biological system.

Madam Mortey called for care and love for the girls to be able to withstand the often-complicated cycle.

‘It is part of us. That is what we are. So, we are pleading with all stakeholders to accept that menstruation is part of life. It has been with us since Adam and we should stop pushing or frustrating them in their periods. We should accept them and help them go through easily,’ she said.

She appealed for more improved sanitary facilities in schools as well as pads for the girls to aid the proper management of their periods.

Madam Peace Yaa Kudzorwu, School Health Education Programme Officer, Ho West Education Office, said limited information on periods caused ignorance and stigma, and therefore sustained education on mensuration remained crucial to building confidence and ending misconceptions.

She encouraged the girls to nurture confidence through the cycle, saying it remained a lifelong experience that must be endured.

‘As a woman, be proud, be happy. Be excited to go through this period. Manage your period with pride and be encouraged that the future of this country is in your womb.’

Health workers in the district educated the girls on care for the menstrual organs, personal hygiene, and disposal of used sanitary materials.

Mr Matthew Asigbey, Senior House Master of the Dzolo Senior High School, who chaired the programme, said menstruation was a sign of fertility and must be embraced and urged the organisers to extend the education senior high schools.

The school children took the opportunity to ask relevant questions and thanked the Foundation for providing the support and opportunity.
