Ethiopia Obtains Over 2.7 Billion USD Over Nine Months: EIC

Ethiopia has attracted over 2.7 billion USD over the last nine months, the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) told the Trade and Tourism Affairs Standing Committee, of the House of Peoples’ Representatives(HPR) today.

While presenting the nine-month performance report of the fiscal year, EIC Commissioner, Lelisse Nemie said though the target was to attract 4.55 billion dollars in FDI during the stated period only 2.762 billion USD was obtained.

The EIC has managed to perform 61 percent of the plan; she elaborated.

Compared to the same period last year, the FDI flow has shown an increase of 10 percent, it was learned.

The Trade and Tourism Affairs Standing Committee urged the EIC to increase the flow of FDI.

Somali Government Evacuates Over 1500 Nationals from Conflict-Ridden Sudan

A plane carrying 92 Somali students and families fleeing the conflict in Sudan landed in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, on Sunday evening.

This flight was preceded by two others carrying 137 citizens, bringing the total number of evacuees arriving in Mogadishu and Garowe yesterday to 230.

‘The Ministry is committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens and shall intensify its efforts if need be,’ said FM Abshir Omar Jama.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Omar announced on Twitter that the Somali Government has successfully evacuated over 1500 nationals from Sudan and transported over 700 to Mogadishu, Garowe, and Hargeisa.

The government will continue to assist the remaining citizens.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the diplomats in Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia for their hard work.

Starlink expresses interest in operating in Somalia

After a recent online meeting between the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Starlink, the satellite internet company has expressed its interest in becoming a licensed operator in Somalia.

The meeting was attended by the Manager of the National Telecommunications Agency, Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, and the head of the International License and Market Dynamics of SpaceX Company.

During the meeting, Starlink presented their internet system, which has already been successfully operated in more than 53 countries.

The head of Global Licensing and Market Dynamics at SpaceX spoke at the meeting, stating ‘We are happy to explain how our system works, what we can bring to Somalia if we get permission from the agency, and we will also cooperate with telecommunication companies and internet providers that operate in Somalia.’

Mustafa welcomed Starlink’s interest in operating in Somalia but emphasized that ‘First of all, Starlink must meet the required licensing requirements and go through the agency’s licensing process. The agency will evaluate Starlink’s bid and the service plan they want to implement in the country.’

Starlink is a satellite internet company operated by SpaceX and established in 2002. Their service has the potential to increase the number of people who use the internet in Somalia, especially in remote areas where there is currently no internet service.

Somali Security Forces Thwart Al-Shabaab Attack on Peace Garden in Mogadishu

The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISA) successfully foiled an Al-Shabaab plot to attack Peace Garden (Beerta Nabadda) in Mogadishu on May 6th.

The army seized explosive vests and a Bajaj motorcycle intended for use in the attack. NISA’s operation also dismantled the network behind the planned attack. Al-Shabaab aimed to harm civilians and disrupt business in the area.

The Capital Security forces continue to suppress terrorist acts in Mogadishu.
