Outgoing LERSA leadership tasks LASG on road infrastructure

Outgoing president, Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), Olorogun James Emadoye, has charged the Lagos state government on the strategic importance of promptly completing the regional roads along the Lekki Epe Axis.

Emadoye said this during the inauguration of the new Executive Council of LERSA on Monday in Lagos.

He acknowledged all efforts Gov., Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and urged him to also begin the construction of the coastal road in addition to all other road infrastructure going on in Lekki Epe Area.

The outgoing LERSA president listed some of his major achievements over the last few years to include the presentation of a memorandum to address the increase on land use charge and a very active environment safety community.

Emadoye said his tenure saw regular roundtable with the state government, political associations, electricity distribution companies, security agencies, businesses and healthcare professionals within the axis.

He said that his administration provided a platform for almost 200 Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and companies to showcase and expand their market reach and procured an official property for LERSA.

“We consistently engaged with government to improve road infrastructure, power and had regular interventions with them on issues pertaining to the toll gate.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic and following the Xenophobic and Endsars attacks, we intervened with donations of medical items, donated a Toyota Hilux and rebuilt the Ajiwe police station.

“We have also commenced the provision of temporary accommodation for police and traffic officers working on the axis by raising funds for the ongoing construction of sleep over bay in Ogombo police station.

“I appreciate everyone for your good work and support throughout my tenure as head of the executive council and pray you extend same to the new executives,” he said.

The incoming president, Mr Sulyman Bello, said his administration in view of the declining life expectancy in Nigeria, was determined to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to increase life expectancy on the Lekki corridor and ultimately the nation.

Bello said the focus of the new regime would also be on public infrastructure, health, education and security.

“I am quite excited with the sterling quality of the assemblage of men and women arrayed beside me in the new LERSA executive council.

“Together, we pledge our unflinching loyalty to our residents and stakeholders; working seamlessly with all relevant organs of the state as well as the traditional authorities.

“In accepting the mantle of leadership of LERSA, I am aware of the onerous responsibilities involved and pledge my dedication to the cause.

“Our role is to work harmoniously together with the elected and appointed officials of state from local government up to the state and federal levels; cutting across the familiar legislative and executive boundaries,” he said.

Mr Ayodeji Amodu, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu, expressed the state government’s commitment to opening up the hinterland across the state to drive development.

He said that the Lagos state government would continue to have a listening ear and collaborate with all stakeholders to turn Lagos into the mega city it truly is.

Impeachment: Abia Assembly suspends Deputy Speaker, 8 others

Abia House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended the Deputy Speaker, Mr Ifeanyi Uchendu, and eight other members, over the purported impeachment of the Speaker, Mr Chinedum Orji.

Orji, who presided over the plenary session, announced the immediate suspension of the lawmakers for one month with no benefits.

Other suspended members included Kennedy Njoku (Osisioma North), Chukwudi Apugo (Umuahia East) and Aaron Uzodike (Aba North).

The rest were Thomas Nkoro (Obingwa West), Okey Igwe (Umunneochi), Chikwendu Kalu (Isiala Ngwa South) Obinna Ichitta (Aba South) and Chijioke Chukwu (Minority Leader – Bende North).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some members of the House had by 9 am on Tuesday, purportedly suspended the speaker for “his insensitivity to the welfare of members and other sundry activities”.

NAN learnt that 16 of the 24-member house had allegedly signed for the speaker’s impeachment that took place at a guest house in Umuahia metropolis.

At the venue, the former Speaker, Kennedy Njoku, had moved the motion for the speaker’s removal and was seconded by Chijioke Chukwu.

The meeting was presided over by the suspended deputy speaker.

In a video that went viral, the members had in a voice vote unanimously endorsed the speaker’s impeachment over so many allegations levelled against him.

They had also elected Apugo as the new speaker.

But, hours after the purported impeachment, Orji convened an emergency plenary session at the assembly complex, where nine members, including himself, resolved to suspend the other nine members.

The motion for their suspension was moved by Jerry Uzosike (Umuahia South), seconded by Solomon Apulonu (Majority Leader – Obingwa East).

NAN reports that only members who were physically participated in the purported impeachment were suspended.

Those whose signatures were allegedly obtained were exonerated, pending further investigations.

Subsequently, the house replaced the suspended deputy speaker with Mandela Obasi, who was immediately sworn in as the new Deputy Speaker.

Orji also informed the Commissioner of Police and Director of State Services that only certified members would be allowed access into the hallowed chamber.

The house, thereafter, set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged misconduct of the suspended members and submit its report in one week.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the plenary session, Orji said that he had faced several humiliations as a speaker.

He said: “They should give the evidence of my financial recklessness.

“They want me to always be at loggerheads with the Governor of the state and I told them that I don’t need to always do that over their own welfare.

“If I decided that I’m no more interested in doing that fight, that it should be a collective effort, I don’t think I’m wrong in doing that.”

UGMC, Luscii, PharmAccess launches first ever ‘NCD Care’ digital service

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has launched its first-ever digital service dubbed ‘NCD Care’ to enable diabetes and hypertension patients access to quality and timely care in the comfort of their homes.

The launch was in collaboration with PharmAccess Foundation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to connecting more people in sub-Saharan Africa to better healthcare, and Luscii app, which helps create more space for care.

NCD Care is an innovative remote digital healthcare service that allows individuals diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension to use self-management tools to enter daily measurements wherever they find themselves to be monitored and managed by medical officers at the UGMC in real-time.

The technology, which is fast and time saving, would help reduce consultancy frequency, and daily trips to the hospital, encourage self-monitoring, bring down the cost of care, reduce the burden on healthcare staff, and ensure healthy living.

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are conditions that are not transmissible directly from one person to another. NCDs are on the rise in Ghana as about 100,000 people die each from diseases like hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, and heart problems.

NCDs are the single highest cause of mortality globally. Research indicates that about 12 million people die annually from NCDs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries alone.

Hypertension and diabetes are the second highest cause of death in Ghana among people aged 30-60 years.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 85 Hypertension-related scientific papers involving over 80,000 healthy people in Ghana, published in 2021 by Bosu et al, revealed that about 35 per cent of people living with hypertension in Ghana were aware they have the disease.

The research also indicated that about 20 per cent of people living with hypertension in Ghana were on treatment, only six percent have their blood pressure controlled and 27 per cent have their blood pressure controlled.

Dr Darius Osei, the Chief Executive of UGMC, speaking at the event, said facility initiated the NCD Care service as part of interventions to help reduce morbidity and mortality rates of these diseases.

He said even though clients of UGMC had the advantage of getting on board to have access to these services, it was open to the public and could be used when people download the Luscii app on their smartphone with Android software 7.0 and above, or iOS 12 and above.

Dr Marian Opoku-Agyakwa, Head of the NCD Service and Family Physician UGMC, said after downloading the app, a team from UGMC would contact clients to explain how to use the app and device, send notifications on when to take measurements, and see a medical doctor.

‘You will then take the measurements yourself in the comfort and safety of your home, and then record the measurements on the Luscii app on your phone to be accessed by your medical doctor remotely,’ she added.

Dr Maxwell Antwi, the Country Director PharmAccess, while speaking on the mandate of PharmAccess commended UGMC for taking the right steps as the trailblazer to use the power of digital technology to address a huge national challenge and meet the growing burden of NCDs for its clients.

He said the good news was that over 50 per cent of people who were in NCD Care have had their Blood pressure (BP) controlled, adding that this was about 100 per cent better than those who visit hospitals in person only.

‘The future of health is in combining in-person with digital care and UGMC is setting the pace,’ he added.

Mr Ronald Scheffer, the Chief Executive Officer of Luscii, expressed appreciation for the initiative and pledged their continuous support to ensure the best NCD care for all.

Dr Anarfi Asamoah-Baah, the Board Chairman of UGMC, commended the initiators of the service and asked ‘that this should help build on the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic.’

He urged the centre to ensure that the service was sustained to achieve its purpose.

Paramount Chief implores youth to protect land for future generations

Nana Ntsiful Essel V, the Paramount Chief of Wassa Fiase Traditional Council, has charged the youth in the area to support traditional leaders to protect lands for future generations.

He said the activities of illegal miners had destroyed vast farmlands and polluted major water bodies in the Wassa Fiase Traditional Area.

According to him, the youth should disassociate themselves from those practices and instead rally behind their respective traditional authorities to help end the menace.

Nana Essel V indicated that posterity would judge them if they continued to destroy the land that would be handed over to them in future.

The Paramount Chief gave the charge through the Kyeamehene of Wassa Fiase Traditional Area, Nana Ampong Kwesi II, who doubles as the chief of Essikuma Bonsawire when he held a meeting with all the divisional chiefs and queen mothers of the Wassa Fiase Traditional area.

The meeting was used to identify the main causes of chieftaincy disputes in the area and how to find lasting solutions to them.

Some other issues raised during the meeting were land and other related cases that needed to be settled out of court, installation of queen mothers and family heads for areas that had none among others.

Nana Essel V lamented that disputes among themselves had affected their progress in diverse ways and therefore called on all the divisional chiefs to bury their differences and unite to bring development to Wassa Fiase Traditional Area.
