Somali Parliament Approves National Intelligence and Security Agency Act

Mogadishu, Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament on Monday voted in favor of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Act after a motion during their session here in Mogadishu.

144 members of the lawmakers voted for it ‘yes’ by raising hands while only one member who attended the session, rejected against the Act according to the Parliament.

“The National Intelligence & Security Agency Establishment Act is the first of many legislative priorities for the FGS. The next are CT Law, Immigration Act, Police Act and others”, Hussein Sheikh Ali, National Security Adivisor to the President said on Twitter Post.

The Parliament also approved the National Power Regulation Act, with 148 members voting in favor for it.

“In a groundbreaking achievement for Somalia’s electricity sector, the Federal Parliament of Somalia have approved the Electricity Act with a sweeping majority highlighting the robust sector reforms led by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources”, said Jamal Taqal Abbas, Minister of Energy and Water Resources.

Somali Government hires 3,000 Teachers for Basic Education

Mogadishu The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia is implementing the order of President, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as well as fulfilling its constitutional obligation of spreading basic education to every Somali child who has reached school age to receive quality education for free.

The Ministry will be hiring 3,000 teachers who will work in public schools in Federal Member States and in Banadir region.

In this event, which marked the start of the teachers recruitment process, the ministers of education from the Federal and regional States, members of the two houses of parliament and some of the country’s education teachers participated it.

The Ministry said the recruitment procedure is free and fair and everyone Somali national can apply for the positions.

Deputy Prime Minister Opens Groundbreaking Humanitarian Summit in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E Salah Ahmed Jama, inaugurated a high-level summit today focused on the country’s humanitarian affairs.

Jama expressed his gratitude towards international organizations for their support to the Somali people and emphasized the urgent need to provide aid to recently liberated areas from extremist groups.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that there are still many people in need of assistance as their assets have been depleted by droughts and sanctions imposed by extremists.

Organized by the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SODMA), the summit was attended by ministers of relief from regional state governments, representatives from the United Nations, donors, ambassadors, and officials from international organizations.

Over 100 Somali police officers graduate in Jubaland State

Kismayo, (SONNA) – More than 100 Somali police recruits have completed a three-month intensive training organized by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in Jubaland’s port city of Kismayo.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Saturday, Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe, said the new officers will be deployed in areas liberated from Al-Shabaab terrorists in Jubaland State to help maintain peace and security.

“We are currently in a state of conflict, and at these times, it is very important to have a strong police force which can take over the security in areas liberated by the military, maintain order, and bring services closer to the community,” President Madobe told the new officers.

The Federal Member State’s President was referring to the ongoing Federal Government of Somalia (FGS)-led offensive in the south and central Somalia which has regained swathes of land from Al Shabab control.

President Madobe lauded ATMIS for its continued support and urged partners to help equip the officers to enable them perform their duties effectively.

“We thank the ATMIS Police, Jubaland officials, and everyone who helped facilitate this high-level training. We request ATMIS and other partners to support the new recruits with the necessary equipment to function properly,” he added.

Jubaland State’s ATMIS Police Coordinating Officer, Superintendent of Police (SP) Okpara Emmanuel Ejike, said the recruitment process and the training imparted were in line with international policing standards.

“The recruits underwent the basic training in policing, gender, Somali penal code, arrest, stop and search, traffic, investigation, human rights, and all other issues required in international policing,” said SP Ejike.

The ATMIS officer noted that the number of female recruits had increased from nine in the previous batch to 20 and hoped that more would enroll in the next recruitment exercise.

Ismail Mohamed Kheer, one of the new graduates, expressed his eagerness to serve and contribute to the peace and development of Somalia.

“I am pleased to have completed the three-month training at the Police Academy. I hope to use the knowledge I have gained to help and protect my community,” Officer Kheer said.

The training is supported by ATMIS and other development partners under the Joint Police Programme and aims to strengthen Somalia’s policing capacity in both urban and rural areas.

SPF officers conclude training on community policing

Mogadishu,Thirty-nine Somali Police Force (SPF) officers have concluded a week-long training on community policing to enhance their knowledge and skills in tackling violent extremism.

The training which was attended by 17 station commanders and six representatives from the Community Policing Directorate was conducted by the Police Component of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The officers were taken through various modules including community policing strategies, conflict resolution, professional standards, and code of ethics. Others were countering violent extremism, community engagement, and gender issues.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Monday, ATMIS Police Team Leader Reforms, Restructuring and Development (RDD), Sao Vandy, said community policing training is a key pillar in building the capacity of the SPF to discharge its duties effectively.

“The community policing training is key in enhancing the capacity of the SPF to take over the country’s security responsibilities when ATMIS forces exit at the end of their mandate,” said the Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Vandy.

The SPF Director of Community Policing, Brigadier General Yusuf Mohamed Farah, noted that community policing is critical in restoring peace and stability in Somalia and called for similar training in the Federal Member States.

“Community policing is a big subject and this training is essential in fostering a good working relationship with the communities we serve,” said Brig. Gen. Farah.

Chief Inspector Warsan Hasan Hagar, one of the participants, said the training had equipped her with valuable skills and knowledge on the relevance of community policing in modern society.

“We have learned how to collaborate, interact, and form close relationships in order to strengthen ties between the community and the police,” said Chief Inspector Hagar.

The training is part of the ATMIS Police mandate which is to help build the capacity of the SPF by offering specialised training, advice, and mentorship in line with the Somali Transition Plan.

Somali Government expresses sorrow over the powerful earquake in Turkey

Mogadishu The Federal Republic of Somalia expressed its sincere condolences to the brotherly government and people of Türkiye after a powerful earthquake struck the Pazarcik district in Türkiye’s southern province of Kahramanmaras on Monday morning, which left a large number of dead and injured, as well as massive destruction.
