Secretary-General Welcomes Appointment of African Union High Representative for Somalia

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General welcomes the appointment of John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as African Union High Representative for Somalia and expresses the full support of the United Nations for this African Union initiative.

He calls on all actors to engage with the African Union High Representative and resume talks towards the implementation of the 17 September 2020 Electoral Agreement for the holding of timely and inclusive elections.

Government condemns terrorist bombing in Mogadishu

Mogadishu Top Government officials of Somalia strongly condemned the terrorist suicide bomb attack at Waberi Police Station in Mogadishu on Sunday evening where over six people including senior police officers were killed and six others were injured, SONNA reported.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Faramajo and Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble expressed grief over the death of police officers and prayed to have souls rest in Jannah while wished the injured ones for quick recovery.

Minister of Interior of Somalia, Mukhtar Hussein Afrah, and Police Commissioner, Abdi Hassan Mohamed shared condolence with families, friends, and Somali people to the loss of senior police officers, soldiers, and civilians killed in the terrorist attack at Waberi Police Station in Mogadishu.

Terrorist militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack which happened during the last 10th days of the holy month of Ramadan.
