في الاجتماع السنوي لمبادرة “التحديات الكبرى” لعام 2021، تُعلِن “مؤسسة بيل وميليندا جيتس” عن مبادرات لدعم أحدث العلوم في البلدان منخفضة ومتوسطة الدخل والمساعدة في إنهاء أزمة فيروس كورونا

تلتزم المؤسسة بمبلغ مبدئي قدره 50 مليون دولار لبرنامج جديد مدته 10 سنوات، وتمنح زمالات القيادة العلمية لـ 14 عالِمًا أفريقيًا

سياتل، 8 نوفمبر 2021 — /PRNewswire/ أعلنت اليوم مؤسسة بيل وميليندا جيتس، في الاجتماع السنوي السابع عشر لمبادرة التحديات الكبرى (Grand Challenges)، عن التزام مبدئي بمبلغ 50 مليون دولار لدعم العلوم والابتكار في البلدان منخفضة ومتوسطة الدخل.  النداء العالمي للعمل من أجل التحديات الكبرى (Grand Challenges Global Call to Action) هي مبادرة مدتها 10 سنوات ستعطي الأولوية للمِنَح للعلماء من البلدان المنخفضة والمتوسطة الدخل، وتدعم التمثيل المتوازن للباحثين الرئيسيين.

 وقد تم تصميم هذه المبادرة طويلة الأجل لضمان أن يلعب العلماء والمؤسسات في البلدان المنخفضة والمتوسطة الدخل دورًا رئيسيًا في تشكيل جدول أعمال البحث والتطوير العالمي، وتطوير الحلول التي يمكن أن تلبي احتياجات مجتمعاتهم بشكل أفضل.  وستشمل مجالات التركيز الأولية علم البيانات، مثل النمذجة الرياضية من أجل إمداد البرامج الوطنية لمكافحة الملاريا بالمعلومات؛ والخدمات الصحية الرقمية للسيدات الحوامل؛ والابتكارات لسد الفجوات التي حددتها البرامج الحالية من أجل القضاء على أمراض المناطق الاستوائية المهملة.

ولمزيد من دعم العلماء الذين يطورون الابتكارات اللازمة لإنهاء الوباء ومعالجة الأولويات الصحية العالمية العاجلة، ستعلن المؤسسة المجموعة الأولى من برنامج زمالة كاليستوس جوما للقيادة العلمية في اليوم الثاني للاجتماع (9 نوفمبر).  وقد سُميت على اسم الراحل كاليستوس جوما، أحد أبرز أصحاب الرؤى في العالم في مجال العلوم التي تقودها أفريقيا، وقد تم إطلاق الزمالة في الاجتماع السنوي في العام الماضي من أجل دعم الجيل القادم من القيادات العلمية في أفريقيا.  وتضم المجموعة الافتتاحية 14 زميلًا من ثماني دول أفريقية —ثمانية نساء وستة رجال— يقودون مشاريع تتراوح من اكتشاف الأدوية الحاسوبي إلى علم الأوبئة الجزيئية.  وسيحصل كل زميل على ما يصل إلى مليون دولار على مدى خمس سنوات.

Young Compete Against Old in Hottest US Rental Market in a Decade

Renting an apartment can be a challenge for new college graduates who are facing the hottest U.S. rental market in a decade, along with some unexpected competition from millennials — people aged 24 to 40 — and even baby boomers — the over-57 club.

“You have aging millennials who are creating families who should be moving from rental situations into ownership but, because of the lack of housing supply, that has been stopped in a lot of instances. And so, what you see is the aging millennial population continues to rent,” says Doug Ressler, manager of business intelligence at Yardi-Matrix, a commercial real estate data and research firm.

“It’s not just about millennials, it’s not just about [Gen] Z [people under 24], we also see that boomers are making a transition, he added. “Their percentage of moving into rental properties is growing in the last five years.”

There are a variety of reasons older people are opting for rentals, according to Ressler.

“They’ve lived in a home for so long and they want to be able to reduce their expenses on a fixed income,” he says. “They want to live in a social cohort, like a retirement community, and things like that where it’s much more socially amenable to them.”

The asking price of apartment rentals was up 10.7% in September 2021 compared to last year at the same time, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

“It’s a hot market. We have never seen this market so hot in the last decade,” says Gay Cororaton, NAR’s senior economist and director of housing and commercial research. “The average rent growth, year-over-year, is about 3-to-5%. We’re seeing 11% rent growth now, so, clearly, way above trends we’ve had in the past.”

Renters are feeling the squeeze because the COVID-19 pandemic caused supply chain issues, slowing down home building in the United States. Instead of the usual 5-to-6 month supply of available single-family homes, supply dropped below two months in January 2021. The lack of housing supply means millennials are having a harder time buying a single-family home, which has been the traditional trajectory in the past.

“The whole building industry was beset by supply chain issues,” Cororaton says. “Shipments couldn’t come in, the price of lumber was rising, manufacturing slowed, workers could not come in [to work], so you have shortages of frames, appliances. So, essentially, just a short supply.”

The housing supply got even tighter during the pandemic as more investors put their money into housing, according to Cororaton, while existing homeowners looked for second homes.

“With the pandemic, there was also a big demand for second homes, for vacation homes. Typically, vacation homes accounted for just about 5% [of the market],” she says. “Early this summer they rose to about 8%. So again, strong demand and strong imbalance of demand and supply caused home prices to rise, made them less affordable.”

The hottest rental markets right now are in the West and South. More renters are moving to Dallas and Houston in Texas, followed by Atlanta, Georgia; New York; Los Angeles; Austin, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Washington, D.C., according to NAR.

Cororaton expects the coming year to be a little better but says the housing shortage is likely to continue for the next few years.

“You know, the old adage of moving from rentals into homeownership, that whole polemic may be changing,” says Ressler. “The sweet spot was always the millennials, and now the millennials are being replaced by the [Gen] Z’s, but the millennials are staying longer and the Z’s are coming on board, and now you’ve got the demographic of the boomers … What it means is a very profitable and dynamic [rental] market that’s going to continue to grow.”

HM King receives Muharraq Club Chairman, Board members, football team

Manama, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa received at Sakhir Palace today Muharraq Club Board Chairman, Shaikh Ahmed bin Ali Al Khalifa, members of the Board of Directors, the football team as well as the technical and administrative staff, on the occasion of the club’s winning of the AFC Cup for the second time in its history.

 

HM the King congratulated them on the honorable achievement, praising the team’s great performance throughout the championship. He lauded the efforts of the technical and administrative staff, wishing the club further success in the upcoming competitions.

 

HM the King stressed that Muharraq Club is one of the oldest clubs in Bahrain and the Arab Gulf region, pointing out its track-record of achievements. He also praised the support shown to the team by the club’s fans who played a key role in bringing about the accomplishment. He directed to make a documentary on the club’s history and achievements, stressing support to all efforts aimed at serving Bahrain in various fields.

 

HM the King commended the tireless efforts of Personal Representative of HM the King for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS), His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and SCYS First Deputy Chairman, President of the General Sport Authority (GSA) and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to develop football and the sport sector in the kingdom.

Education Minister receives UAE Permanent Representative to UNESCO

Paris, Education Minister Dr. Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi received the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Shaikh Salem Khalid Abdulla Al Qassimi.

 

The two sides discussed educational ties between the two countries, stressing aspects of cooperation between the cultural attaches of Bahrain and the UAE to the Unesco.

NGO quotes in response to COP26 Adaptation and Loss & Damage Day

In response to today’s announcement from the UK of £1m to support delivery of faster and more effective global humanitarian action, including in response to climate-related disasters, Cat Pettengell, Director of Climate Action Network UK (CAN-UK) said:

“It is time for the UK to get serious about finance for loss and damage, rather than constantly going back to the limited and already cut aid budget to finance every climate commitment. Enhanced humanitarian action – such as this £1m announced today – is important, but we are now living in the era of devastating climate change impacts and that demands a justice and solidarity approach to mobilise entirely new sources of finance at scale to address loss and damage for those least responsible for causing climate change. This is a requirement for success at COP26.”

Tracy Carty Senior Policy Adviser — Climate Change, Oxfam GB, said:

“While we welcome the UK committing new finance to help countries deal with the disastrous impacts of climate change, it’s deeply ironic that on the day the COP focuses on Loss & Damage, the UK as host has earmarked just £1m for this.

“It’s unconscionable to leave developing countries footing the bill for a climate crisis they did least to cause and progress on climate finance is one of the litmus tests of COP26. A test that at this rate, world leaders are at serious risk of failing.”

Colin McQuistan Head of Climate and Resilience at Practical Action, said:

“This announcement made by the UK Government, the French Government, the IKEA Foundation and Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies is to be welcomed. However this will not unstick the issue of finance for loss and damage in the negotiations, as sadly it does not go far enough. This announcement makes some excellent suggestions to enhance humanitarian action, it’s about making the humanitarian system operate faster, more efficient and more focused. But as we have seen when numerous climate events unfold, the humanitarian system is already the first to respond. Getting it to respond earlier will save more lives, but what is also needed is long term post event support. Support that goes beyond the humanitarian phase. When cyclone Idai hit Southern Africa millions of people were hit hard and the humanitarian system responded valiantly, but sadly this support quickly dried up as the humanitarian funds ran out. What is needed is long term support, support that remains after the humanitarian phase ends, support that addresses the loss and damage sustained, a comprehensive set of activities that provides a just transition for these impacted communities, a transition that allows them to thrive despite the escalating climate emergency.”
