NGO quotes in response to COP26 Adaptation and Loss & Damage Day

In response to today’s announcement from the UK of £1m to support delivery of faster and more effective global humanitarian action, including in response to climate-related disasters, Cat Pettengell, Director of Climate Action Network UK (CAN-UK) said:

“It is time for the UK to get serious about finance for loss and damage, rather than constantly going back to the limited and already cut aid budget to finance every climate commitment. Enhanced humanitarian action – such as this £1m announced today – is important, but we are now living in the era of devastating climate change impacts and that demands a justice and solidarity approach to mobilise entirely new sources of finance at scale to address loss and damage for those least responsible for causing climate change. This is a requirement for success at COP26.”

Tracy Carty Senior Policy Adviser — Climate Change, Oxfam GB, said:

“While we welcome the UK committing new finance to help countries deal with the disastrous impacts of climate change, it’s deeply ironic that on the day the COP focuses on Loss & Damage, the UK as host has earmarked just £1m for this.

“It’s unconscionable to leave developing countries footing the bill for a climate crisis they did least to cause and progress on climate finance is one of the litmus tests of COP26. A test that at this rate, world leaders are at serious risk of failing.”

Colin McQuistan Head of Climate and Resilience at Practical Action, said:

“This announcement made by the UK Government, the French Government, the IKEA Foundation and Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies is to be welcomed. However this will not unstick the issue of finance for loss and damage in the negotiations, as sadly it does not go far enough. This announcement makes some excellent suggestions to enhance humanitarian action, it’s about making the humanitarian system operate faster, more efficient and more focused. But as we have seen when numerous climate events unfold, the humanitarian system is already the first to respond. Getting it to respond earlier will save more lives, but what is also needed is long term post event support. Support that goes beyond the humanitarian phase. When cyclone Idai hit Southern Africa millions of people were hit hard and the humanitarian system responded valiantly, but sadly this support quickly dried up as the humanitarian funds ran out. What is needed is long term support, support that remains after the humanitarian phase ends, support that addresses the loss and damage sustained, a comprehensive set of activities that provides a just transition for these impacted communities, a transition that allows them to thrive despite the escalating climate emergency.”

Kavalan Launches ‘Triple Sherry Cask’

Rare combination of 3 exquisite sherry oak casks

TAIPEI, Nov. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Kavalan has launched its Triple Sherry Cask, a rare combination of Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez (PX) and Moscatel-aged casks with Kavalan’s velvety texture and signature sweetness.

Pedro Ximénez is known as the king of sweet sherry and Moscatel is the queen of sweet sherry.

“This is the first time we’ve combined our whisky in three different sherry casks. It’s all about multiplying and enriching the sherry flavours to make a distinct whisky that has dried fruits, rich caramel, sweet maltose and tropical fruits as its profile,” said CEO Mr YT Lee.

After fully maturing in three sherry casks, Triple Sherry Cask showcases a three-stage balancing craft in the marrying vats. The process allows the three whiskies, each fully matured in the three different sherry casks to rest and meld together in perfect fusion, locking in optimal smoothness.

“During this process, the flavours collide through a myriad combination of the three sherry cask whiskies, creating up to 9 distinct sherry dimensions. With its main character the dried fruits of the Oloroso cask, Triple Sherry is embellished with the sweetness of PX and Moscatel casks,” said Senior Blender Zerose Yang.

Like a smooth flamenco dance, its notes of cinnamon, candied smoked plum, and citrus, layered with berry, tropical fruit, and longan aromas, with a dash of honey, chocolate, and toffee playfully tease the taste buds.

The packaging design breaks with the past, visually connecting the taste and aroma of the liquid for the first time. The fluid painting intertwined with white, gold, and red colours, which symbolises the multilayered and smooth taste of triple sherry cask whisky. Also it presents the combination of the colour of new make, whisky and sherry wine. Underscored on the tin capsule is a double silver line, symbolising the Central Mountain and Snow Mountain ranges surrounding Kavalan Distillery.

The new 700ml, 40% ABV Kavalan will appear first on shelves in France, Canada, Japan, Singapore, China, Australia, New Zealand and Guam at a RRP of NT$2,300.

The ALDO Group pursues its commitment towards climate action

The Canadian company is currently participating in the World Climate Summit and has recently renewed its climate neutral certification for the fourth year running.

MONTREAL, Nov. 08, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Climate issues are more crucial than ever, and the ALDO Group is dedicated to maintaining its commitment to building a low-carbon future. In addition to announcing the renewal of its climate neutral certification for a fourth consecutive year, the company is currently participating in the 11th World Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland. A few weeks ago, the Canadian fashion footwear company also joined We Mean Business, an international coalition of more than 600 companies calling upon the leaders of the world’s largest economies to reinforce their climate action objectives during the G20 and COP26 discussions.

“Inspired by the COP21 in Paris 6 years ago, we made a decision in 2018 to become the first climate neutral fashion footwear company. This year’s COP will be a critical meeting – there is massive worldwide support for bold action on climate change. We hope that our participation will contribute in a small way to a very big global challenge,” said David Bensadoun, CEO of the ALDO Group.

World Climate Summit: Rallying the Fashion Industry’s Stakeholders

On November 8 at 10 a.m. (GMT), Jonathan Frankel, Senior Vice-President of APS at the ALDO Group, will join the panel Lead by Example – Harnessing Innovation Towards a Carbon Neutral Fashion & Textile Industry to discuss how the fashion industry can work towards reducing its environmental footprint and how collaboration between manufacturers, designers and consumers is key to reach carbon neutrality.

“The long-term sustainability of the global fashion industry requires systemic change that goes beyond the capabilities of any one company. We cannot fight this problem alone. We strongly believe in collaboration, and that is why we wanted to take part in this unifying event,” said Jonathan Frankel.

Well aware that the fashion industry has an impact on global warming, the ALDO Group intensified its climate actions in recent years. The organization is also a member of multi-stakeholder associations that promote partnerships for concerted industry-wide actions, such as the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), the Fashion Pact and the United Nations Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action (UNFCCC).

The ALDO Group’s Journey Towards Reducing Its Carbon Footprint

In 2018, the ALDO Group became the first fashion footwear and accessories company in the world to be certified climate neutral for its corporate stores, offices and distribution centres. The organization then reinforced its environmental commitment by also having eCommerce shipments and product transportation certified climate neutral.

In 2020, the company reduced carbon emissions from its operations by 74% compared to 2013. This year, it carried forward its sustainability journey by continuing to reduce its net emissions and compensating the unavoidable ones through a combination of nature-based forest conservation and clean energy projects. And for the fourth consecutive year, the ALDO Group has received its climate neutral company certification from the South Pole Group – a leading provider of global sustainability solutions and services with a transparent and rigorous certification process.

“It’s very exciting to see the ALDO Group continuing to make progress on climate action. The company has demonstrated industry leadership and we congratulate them on their commitments and ever-increasing ambition,” said Renat Heuberger, CEO and co-founder of South Pole.

Having achieved significant reductions for its operations’ emissions, the ALDO Group has been addressing other important issues: from waste management to its positive impact on local communities, from teaming up with partners to improve their social and environmental footprint to promoting diversity and inclusion. In terms of products, the company aims to continue introducing more innovative low impact materials in its collections and to increase its use of recycled materials, such as polyester. The company is also working to decarbonize it supply chain by working closely with its suppliers.

It is also important to remember that in 2019, the ALDO Group joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Its GHG reduction targets are therefore in line with climate science.

Member of the We Mean Business Coalition

Recognizing the need for collective climate action, the ALDO Group signed the We Mean Business coalition’s open letter earlier this month. Ahead of the crucial G20 and COP 26 summits, more than 600 companies from around the world called on the leaders of the world’s largest economies to do their utmost to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 °C and to reinforce their objectives. The signatories represent sectors ranging from energy and transportation to fashion and construction.

CGTN: Global Action Initiative 2021 – Project Earth

(“Global Action Initiative 2021 – Project Earth” airs from November 2 to 6)

BEIJING, Nov. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — China Media Group’s week-long event “Global Action Initiative 2021 – Project Earth” has highlighted the gravity of the climate crisis, heard from global leaders, scientists, young activists, and explored ideas and solutions.

“Global Action Initiative 2021 – Project Earth” airs from November 2 to 6

Our Day Five program focused on young people about their ideas and innovations. At the end of the show, we released our declaration – the “Global Media Strategic Framework on Climate Action”. It appeals for immediate actions to reach global targets on curbing carbon emissions. The declaration also proposes the creation of a Global Alliance of Media on Climate to build a framework for climate action that would include:

– Prioritizing climate-related reporting to raise public awareness.
– Sharing resources on climate reporting to better fulfill the role of media’s social responsibility.
– Organizing joint media events to enhance public engagement and to encourage community building.
– Collaborating on amplifying young people’s voices to engage youth as a major part of the climate crises solution.
– Strengthening collaboration across all media platforms to become a unified source for providing credible information.
– Sharing media resources with academic and business communities, as well as international NGOs and for-profit organizations, to augment climate issue initiatives.
– Working together to ensure authenticity in journalism to combat climate-crisis misinformation and demagoguery.

In their keynote speeches on Day Five program, UN Resident Coordinator in China, Siddharth Chatterjee, spoke about the need for a seismic shift in innovation, investment and technology. World Wildlife Fund’s Global Leader of Climate and Energy, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, who is also the former Peruvian minister of environment, warned that we are in a “decisive decade” as the world strives for net zero emissions and a resilient economy.

Qin Gang, China’s ambassador to the U.S., took questions from students from China and the United States about climate change. We also heard from a senior World Bank official, a Nobel Prize winning economist, and professor at Harvard University.

Our shows on the first four days featured the impacts of climate change on the global environment, the importance of biodiversity, media’s responsibility and individuals’ actions of global citizens, with heads of state and government, senior officials from the UN, IMF and World Bank and climate experts sharing their perspectives.

A significant part of our coverage includes five documentaries “Zero Hour”. They examine the impact of extreme weather patterns and how young people across the world are finding creative ways to mitigate the climate crisis.
