Tetracore, Inc. Introduces First USDA-Licensed Real-Time PCR Test for the Detection of Foot and Mouth Disease Virus in Bovine, Swine and Ovine

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Tetracore announced today the licensing of their VetAlert™ Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) RNA Diagnostic Test Kit by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB).   It is one of the first licensed FMD diagnostic kits that can be manufactured on the U.S. mainland, critical for a rapid response in the event of an FMD outbreak.  Additionally, this diagnostic kit provides animal health first responders with a critical tool to mitigate the potentially catastrophic economic and animal welfare impacts of an FMD outbreak.

Providing Advanced Molecular and Immunological Detection

The VetAlert FMDV RNA high-performance test kit was developed by Tetracore scientists and will be commercialized and sold by Tetracore.

Nearly two decades ago, Tetracore validated and published a real-time RT-PCR assay for FMDV, as described by Callahan et al. 2002. The primer and probe set from the publication became part of the OIE and USDA reference test methods.

“It is well-known that RNA viruses mutate and evolve, and for this reason, established PCR test designs should be periodically re-evaluated to ensure that the test designs remain fit for purpose,” says Dr. Callahan, Business Development Manager and USDA CVB liaison for Tetracore.

With this in mind, Tetracore evaluated contemporary FMD viral sequences to design a new primer-probe set that was blended with the original test to create an updated FMDV rRT-PCR, the VetAlert FMDV RNA Test Kit.

The updated test design was validated in studies with the Pirbright Institute in the UK and the National Center for Foreign Animal Diseases (NCFAD) in Winnipeg, Canada, and performed well compared to their reference test methods.

UN: Thousands of Tigray Children Risk Death from Starvation, Malnutrition

GENEVA – United Nations agencies are warning that tens of thousands of children in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray province are at risk of death from starvation and malnutrition-related illnesses because aid agencies cannot reach the region with humanitarian relief.

Conflict-ridden Tigray remains off-limits to United Nations and private aid agencies despite Ethiopian government promises they would have unfettered access to the region.

UNICEF spokesman James Elder told reporters Friday in Geneva the region is on the brink of famine, adding that, without immediate assistance, Tigray will face a crisis not seen in a decade.

“We are seeing more and more young children and babies slide dangerously close to sickness and potential death from malnutrition, so we have rung alarm bells and alarm bells and here we are now,” he said. “We now have the largest number of people classified as food-insecure in a decade since Somalia. And, as I say that, [there is the] very real risk of deaths of tens of thousands of children.”

An estimated quarter-million people died in the devastating 2010-2011 Somali famine, more than half of them children under the age of five. The United Nations says more than 350,000 people in Tigray are on the verge of famine. It warns an estimated 33,000 severely malnourished children in inaccessible areas are at high risk of death.

The World Health Organization says its teams and mobile health clinics are ready to go into Tigray and administer care but have been turned away by the warring parties.

WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said access to the region is key to tackling what she called a public health emergency.

“Malnourished children are more likely to contract … any of the infectious diseases, and die of it, such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and measles. Malaria and malnutrition is a lethal combination,” she said. “So, we are over 350 severe acute malnutrition cases among children under five years of age last week only. That was just last week, 18 of them with complications.”

Harris said the WHO is kicking off a cholera vaccination campaign Saturday, as the disease thrives during the rainy season, which begins this month. She said 4,000 people will be inoculated as a preventive measure as Tigray has had outbreaks in the past.

But the campaign’s success requires safe access by health workers, she added.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered troops into the region in November to neutralize leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which ruled the continent’s second most populous country for nearly three decades.

Ahmed, recipient of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, said he sent troops to the area in response to TPLF attacks on federal army camps.

The prime minister promised the violence would be short-lived, but the fighting continues and atrocities such as rape are increasing.

SNA kills (10) Al-Shabaab militants in central Somalia

Hiiraan(SONNA):At least 10 al-Shabaab terror group militants were killed in an operation in the Hiiraan region of central Somalia late Friday, said authorities.

The Somali National Army conducted an operation against the terror group, according to a statement from the army’s radio.

It said several militants were wounded but managed to escape and there were no casualties on the army’s side.

Al-Shabaab militants have been targeting security officers patrolling the Kenyan-Somali border.

As the horn of African country is preparing to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in coming months, the military has intensified operations against the terror group.

The Somali army is conducting a two-week operation against al-Shabaab in the region, so far killing more than 130 terrorists and liberating six villages, according to reports.

Somalia welcomes Kenya’s reopening of airspace

The Somali government on Thursday welcomed the reopening of the airspace by Kenya following a month-long closure due to a diplomatic spat between the two neighboring countries.

Government spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu said the move by Nairobi could result in the full normalization of bilateral ties between Nairobi and Mogadishu.

“This move could pave the way for normalization of the bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries,” Moalimuu said in a brief statement.

The government spokesman’s statement came after Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday that the decision to reopen airspace to Somalia was made in a goodwill gesture to boost the bilateral ties and was necessitated by mutual interests of the two countries.

Somalia in December 2020 severed its diplomatic ties with neighboring Kenya, accusing Nairobi of frequently violating Mogadishu’s sovereignty. Mogadishu restored diplomatic relations with Nairobi on May 5 with mediation by Qatar.

Kenya’s aviation authorities suspended all flights to and from Somalia on May 11 after Somalia refused to lift a ban imposed in 2020 on Kenya’s cargo flights for khat (miraa).

Mogadishu (SONNA)-Around 30 Shabab members have been killed in separate operations conducted by SNA in Hiran and Lower Shabelle regions in the past 48 hours.

Seven Al-Shabab members were gunned down in a planned security operation by Somali National Army in Busley and Bulo-Alundi villages under Janaale town in Lower Sh. Region, on Saturday.

17 Al-Shabab terrorists were killed and many more injured in offensive operations in Hiiraan region,central Somalia in on Friday.

SNA destroyed Shabab bases near Mahaas district where they used to carry out attacks on civilians and the government forces.

SNA intensified its offensive operations to hunt down terrorists in many parts of the country which resulted in that the terrorists to loose ground and suffer heavy casualties.
